Learning Disability Awareness

  Return to previous page

About the course

This 3-hour practical workshop is designed for care staff supporting individuals with learning disabilities across home and community settings. It provides a clear, structured understanding of learning disability while maintaining a strong focus on practical application in everyday care. The session explores how differences in cognitive processing, communication, understanding, and adaptive functioning impact a person’s ability to engage with the world around them. Particular attention is given to how these differences influence independence, emotional regulation, behaviour, and participation in daily routines. Through case studies, discussion, and reflective exercises, participants will be supported to translate knowledge into effective, person-centred support strategies that can be applied immediately in their care roles.

What will you learn

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:
  • Understand what is meant by learning disability, including levels of need and associated profiles
  • Recognise how cognitive and communication differences affect understanding, decision-making, and daily functioning
  • Adapt communication to improve comprehension using clear language, structure, and visual supports
  • Support independence through graded assistance, prompting, and consistent routines
  • Recognise the link between unmet need, frustration, and behaviours that challenge
  • Respond to distress in a calm, structured, and supportive manner
  • Contribute to care planning that is realistic, consistent, and promotes skill development
  • Reflect on their own practice, with a focus on dignity, autonomy, and long-term outcomes
