About the course

A practical, engaging workshop designed to help care staff understand and apply capacity law in everyday practice. Using real-life examples and discussion, this course builds confidence in supporting decision-making, recognising when capacity may be in question, and contributing effectively within the MDT.

What will you learn

  • Understand the Capacity and Self-Determination (Jersey) Law
  • Recognise and respond to Significant Restrictions on Liberty (SROL)
  • Apply the two-stage capacity test in practice
  • Understand how the law impacts care planning and risk decisions
  • Support people to make their own decisions wherever possible
  • Contribute to best interests decision-making
  • Balance autonomy, risk, and safety
  • Take an active role in MDT discussions
  • Reflect on practice to ensure it is person-centred and least restrictive

Course content

This course is delivered by Richard Boak Richard has extensive experience supporting people with neurodiversity, learning disabilities, and brain injury. He works closely with teams making complex decisions around capacity and SROL, and brings a strong focus on communication to help individuals express understanding and make their own choices.
