Policy Statement

A person is defined as having a Special Education Need (SEN) if they have a learning difficulty or disability which calls for special education provision to be made for them.

Care College Principles are:

  • All students should be encouraged, valued, and accepted whatever their individual need.
  • Every teacher/trainer is a teacher of those with special educational needs and should recognise neurodiversity and adopt a supportive approach to all students.
  • The course teacher/trainer has primary responsibility for providing all students with access to the learning aims of the course.
  • All teachers/trainers should ensure that, by differentiating their planning and teaching, there are suitable learning challenges for all; they should attempt to overcome potential barriers to learning.

Policy Scope

While this has been part of standard practice in the adult education department, the revised Code of Practice for Special Educational Needs and Disability 0-25 years 2014, details a legal obligation on the College to identify and support all students who possess a SEND up to 25 years of age. We aim to offer the same level of support to all SEND students regardless of age.

Policy

Definition of Special Education Need (SEN)

A person has a SEN if they have a learning difficulty or disability which necessitates special education provision to be made.

A student has a learning difficulty or disability if he or she:

  • Has a significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of students on the same course.
  • Has a disability, which prevents or hinders the student from making use of facilities of a kind generally provided for others on the same course.

These needs are categorized into four key areas that may create a barrier to learning:

  • Communication and interaction
  • Cognition and learning
  • Social, emotional, and mental health difficulties
  • Sensory and/or physical needs

Identification and Support

Students are asked to disclose any learning difficulties or disabilities as part of their enrolment. Any disclosures will be passed on to the College lead to plan strategies for support.

Strategies of support may include:

  • Extra time for completion of study and submission of work
  • Additional rest breaks
  • 1:1 tuition and supervision
  • Assistive technology
  • Assistance in class

All strategies planned will be added to the learner’s record and shared/designed with the learner directly.
